System Imbalance

The System Imbalance in each settlement period. System imbalance is most commonly represented by the Net Imbalance Volume (NIV). NIV is the volume of energy that the System Operator (National Grid ESO) purchased to balance the system in any given settlement period, that is, the net sum of positive and negative balancing actions. If NIV is positive then the system is 'short' (not enough generation), if NIV is negative then the system is 'long' (too much generation).
